Qualitative
- Everyone
as an individual needs to transcribe 10-15 minutes of tape.
- Everyone
needs to provide a brief description of the topics covered in interview 1
and Interview 2
- Reflect
on the process of interviewing
- What
it's like being the interviewer
- What
it's like being the notetaker
- Things
you noticed
- Problems,
issues, etc. refer to reading concepts and issues when appropriate. MUST
be appropriate, not just thrown in Ð build it into your discussion of
process.
- Push
your thinking, show us that you are grappling with something meaty.
- Content
memoing is different Ð you can do it, but it's not required.
What do we know about qualitative research?
- Looking
for patterns and recurrent themes/words/ideas
- Make
the categories fit the data
- Analyse
as you collect
- Iterative
process
- The
whole purpose is to gain insight into the environment into your research
- Don't
OVER-buy into one way of looking at it or coding it
- Your
experience of the world plays a really big role
What do we want to know about qualitative research?
- Strategies
or methods for finding causal relationships between things
- How
can we see new things in a familiar setting?
- how to
get the most out of your subjects
- How do
you elicit information without asking leading questions, if you feel
they're holding back?
- What's
the difference between grounded approaches and induction analysis?
- How do
you tell the difference between leading and clarifying?
- How do
you verify your analyses?
- How do
you deal with outliers/negative cases?
- How do
we apply a theoretical lens to data as opposed to personal opinions and
hunches?
You don't get to the end of the research and analysis cycle
Ð you just write your story. Your
direction is not your destination.
After coding and "chunking" all bins Ð write a
memo on each bin.
You have more data than you can use, always Ð and if you
don't, you don't have enough data.
Start thinking, "What is Our Story"?
Moving from analysis to representation Ð first you find your
story, then you worry about how to tell it.
